This statue of a little man is typical of the old wood carvings which originated on the Indo-Nepal border region, notably the Terai. In this fine carving, one notices the moustache, denoting the Indian influence. Similarly the hat is a good indication of provenance. It is no uncommon for the arms and the legs to be absent, although there is always the possibility that they were discarded or were removed at some later period, which we suspect was the case here. The face is particularly revealing and the patine on the old wood contributes greatly to the work, with traces of what looks like very old paint, still present.
