The Kamasutra written sometime in the 3rd century by a North Indian Scholar called
Vatsyayana Mallanaga, means literally “THE TREATISE ON PLEASURE”.
Kama is the Hindu God of Love. It also means desire. Sutra refers to a narrative,
Manual or guide. The Kamasutra is therefore a classic guide to love making.
This Kamasutra statue displayed here is a rare artifact. Made of stone, its particularity
is that it was unearthed – not in India as might have been expected – but in Kathmandu
Valley! It came to light by coincidence when a nepali house-owner was excavating for the extension of his house!
It is clear that this work of exceptional quality should be admired from the horizontal position, and not vertically. On the underpart of the statue is a protruding piece which indicates that this work might at one time have served as a adornment to a door, porch or window?
The piece is definitely antique and a beautiful example of the ancient ART of LOVEMAKING. Because it was was buried in the soil for so long, it has little patine, which is hardly surprising under these circumstances.
